Financial & Retirement Planning

Financial planners provide general financial planning services. Some financial planners are also registered to provide specialized services. They may be registered as investment advisers, or they may hold insurance or security licenses that allow them to buy or sell those products. Ethical financial planners will refer you to another professional, such as an Accountant or Stockbroker, for services that they are not qualified to supply. Financial planners can earn designators through a regulatory organization for the services they provide, but are not regulated by the government as "financial planners". This means that anybody can call himself or herself a financial planner. Many financial planners have earned Certified Financial Planner®(CFP) certification, or the Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC), or Personal Financial Specialist (CPA-PFS) designations.
Financial planners can receive payment for their services in a number of different ways, including a salary from the company they work for, by fees based on an hourly rate, a flat rate, or a percentage of your assets and/or income, by commissions from a third party based on investment products sold to you, or by a combination of fees and commissions. For a complete list of financial planners, see the Yellow Pages in your Telephone Book under "Financial". Also refer to the CFP Board of Standards at www.cfp-board.org or call toll-free 1-800-487-1497.
