NYS-certified Long-Term Care Ombudsman volunteers
visit adult, assisted living and skilled nursing
homes to advocate for residents’ rights. Health Insurance
Information, Counseling and Assistance Program
(HIICAP) volunteers provide one-on-one counseling
to assist Medicare beneficiaries with understanding
their health insurance options. Advance Planning for
End of Life (APEL) Program volunteers assist adults
of all ages with pre-planning for the final phase of life
and completing advance health care directives before
a health care emergency or serious illness happens.
Elder Friendly volunteer evaluators, age 60 or older,`
evaluate businesses “undercover” on rigorous standards
of accessibility, customer service and layout. |

| Offers opportunities for adults age 55 or older to "get things done" in the community at 130 different agencies,
schools, or government organizations. RSVP members receive benefits
including volunteer insurance at no cost. Many opportunities available to
help with special events or on an on-going basis. Good Morning,
Broome! is a volunteer-based program to provide telephone
reassurance to persons affected by a medical condition or simply need more
personal contact. Calls are scheduled Mon. through Fri. between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. |

| Recruits volunteers 55 years and older for the Senior Peer Counseling Program. We seek volunteers who believe that people have a life-long potential for change. The ideal volunteer is a sensitive, warm, compassionate person who has the ability to evoke trust and response from others. The volunteer is expected to attend free extensive training and will receive on-going supervision from professional clinical social workers. |

| Volunteers needed to assist with collection and distribution of household goods, and with personal and child care items. |
| Foster Grandparent Program | |
| Offers income-eligible seniors, age 60 and older, the chance to make a difference in the life of a child. Foster Grandparents provide love, encouragement, and companionship to children with special needs on a one-on-one basis, 20 hours or more per week. Volunteers serve at schools, day care centers and institutions, as well as Head Start, summer, and after-school programs located throughout Broome County. Foster Grandparents receive an hourly stipend, travel reimbursement, a daily meal, an annual physical examination, and paid time off. Volunteers also receive orientation prior to placement, and on-going training. (Note: The stipend is nontaxable, non-reportable income that does not affect eligibility for other programs and services.) |
